ACE ATV in Bromsgrove has provided the Gloucestershire Rural Crime Unit with a Polaris Ranger 570 to assist in the force’s regular operations against organised rural crime.

PC Ashley Weller from the Rural Crime Unit explains, “The Ranger 570 has been met with a great response from the public when seen around the County, and these loan vehicles are now an essential tool for the Rural Crime Unit and have been invaluable in keeping crime down in rural areas.”

Now a welcome sight patrolling on the land around the Gloucestershire constabulary, the Polaris Ranger 570 has assisted in high risk missing person activities, being deployed to assist the search over vast land areas.

“These areas can take days to cover by foot, but the Ranger cuts a lot of time off of these searches,” Ashley continues, “Working its way through brambles and rough terrain easily, the Ranger has also assisted with medical cases, like getting access to help a walker who broke their leg whilst hiking.”

Operation “FireFly” was introduced as a direct response to rural crime. With the Ranger 570 from Polaris having no issues with difficult terrain, its presence and ability to get to the scene of an incident quickly and easily has seen an instant reduction in crime around import monuments, areas of special interest, farming and common land in the region.

The Ranger allows the force to patrol areas more quickly than would be possible on foot, as well as gaining access to off-road areas that would be impassable by usual force vehicles, and has quickly become an invaluable part of the team. With its sizable load bed area, the force has seen the potential for drone deployment from the Ranger 570, allowing more areas to be covered quickly, in all weathers and across all sorts of terrain.

Ashley concluded: “With the Polaris Ranger the force has been able to save money with less dependency on air support as well as saving time with increased areas covered in searches. All in all it has made a marked difference in reducing crime in the countryside.”
